A common question among nursing families is what medications are safe to use.
According to Hale and Rowe, authors of Medications and Mother’s Milk, most drugs do not enter human milk in levels that are hazardous to a nursing baby.
It’s important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using any prescription, over-the-counter, or natural health supplements to ensure they are safe for you, your baby, and your milk supply.
However, it’s also important to note that most drugs and supplements warn against usage in pregnant and lactating parents. Pregnant and nursing people aren’t generally included in research studies.
It’s common for parents to be given, or to believe, inaccurate information around medication use while breastfeeding. This can result in:
- a premature cessation of breastfeeding
- the avoidance of necessary medications
- stopping medication abruptly.
The decision to take medications or supplements is based on a risk-benefit analysis.
Do the benefits of the medication or supplements outweigh any risks? This will depend on your, and your baby’s, unique health situation. Some medications or supplements may be considered safe, but they may not be suitable for you or your baby specifically.
Furthermore, if you are taking a medication that is not considered safe or you decide to stop a medication, a plan to taper off safely with little side effects may be required.
